Reports from Past Meetings
Weight loss surgery study day, Leeds, 27th October 2009
With the increase in bariatric surgery, many dietitians are coming across patients who are exploring this as an option or who have had surgery to aid weight loss. Consequently the recent study day was held with this in mind.
Emma Croft, Lead for Obesity and Physical Activity in Leeds, opened the meeting. She discussed the Leeds patient pathway in which it is dietitians who assess and refer patients in for bariatric surgery. She also spoke about her input into the commissioning of services and the dilemma caused by the fact that although there has been a substantial increase in commissioning of bariatric surgery, the numbers being referred are greater that the numbers commissioned.
Jenny Hughes, Weight Management Dietitian in Liverpool, gave an enlightening presentation on the gastric band, the dietary management and the common problems that patients encounter. Denise Thomas, Head of Dietetics, Portsmouth followed this with a presentation on the gastric bypass and her experiences. The final presentation on sleeve gastrectomies was given by Caroline Sale, Bariatric Dietitian, Luton. The sleeve gastrectomy is a relatively new procedure.
In the afternoon, it was time for the audience to do the work. Gail Pinnock, Bariatric Dietitian, London led the case studies. This was followed by a very interactive question and answer session with full participation from the audience.
The feedback from the course was excellent and included comments such as:
Over view of patient pathway and commissioning -good insight
Narrow focus of the course- content all relevant. Rare to have a study day that is all relevant for own work area
Lots of valuable information and opportunities for networking
Good mix of experience and treatment methods. Made more confident especially knowing there is no “right answer”
Case studies really helped to information and learning together
Lots of ideas were given for further courses and work to be done. There are plans for an advanced course and more details will follow.
This course was run by dietitians who are members of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS.) All of us are members of DOM UK also and as members of BOMSS and DOM UK are keen to promote the knowledge base and skills of dietitians regarding bariatric surgery. BOMSS opened its doors to bariatric dietitians and nurses several years ago and presented an opportunity to promote the role of dietetics and partnership working to the surgeons. The first inaugural meeting of BOMSS takes place on the 21st and 22nd January. Dietitians, nurses and surgeons running joint workshops and giving presentations.

Childhood Obesity 3 day training October 2008
In October 2008 DOM UK and the BDA’s Paediatric Group helped dietitians to get their act together by holding a successful comprehensive training course on childhood obesity. This was the first such training course on childhood obesity for dietitians in the UK. The development and delivery of such a course for dietitians had been the initial objective of Dom UK’s Childhood Obesity sub-group when it formed in the summer of 2006. The Paediatric Group then came on board to help with the development and delivery of the course.
In late October 27 dietitians from many different posts across the UK came together at Knuston Hall, East Northamptonshire to undertake the course over three days. The venue was stunning, the food was fantastic and the lectures were all of a very high standard. Topics covered included assessment, the evidence base, group work, using behavioural change techniques, public health policy, working with families, parenting issues, physical activity for children and child protection issues.
All the speakers had put a lot of hard work into producing useful, practical sessions and the whole course was very well received by those who attended.
‘by far and away the best training I have done in a very long time!’
‘Thanks again for such an inspiring course’
‘Thanks again for organising and running such a great course’
We will be running the course for a second time in 2009, again held in Knuston Hall, East Northamptonshire on Monday 16th – Wednesday 18th November 2009. We are currently incorporating improvements to the course based on last year’s evaluations; however the topics and many of the speakers will remain the same. Fees are expected to be £475 for DOM UK and Paediatric Group members and £495 for non-members. This includes 2 nights accommodation and all food, while Sunday night bed and breakfast is available for a further charge.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank to all our speakers, Slimming World the course sponsor, the participants and everyone who returned their reflective statements. This course proved to be very popular last year and as there are limited numbers we would highly recommend booking a place early.
